“Immediately after President Ronald Reagan was shot, Secretary of State Haig, with national security adviser Richard Allen, said: “As of now, I am in control here in the White House.”March 30, 1981
Alexander Haig had a long career in and around U.S. politics and the military. He was Chief of Staff under Presidents’s Nixon and Gerald Ford. Also , served as Secretary of State under Ronald Reagan and when Reagan was shot infamously held the press conference at the White House immediately after the assassination attempt and asserted he was in control till the Vice President returned to Washington. The statement was controversal since the Constitution requires the Speaker of the House or Pro Tempore of the Senate to resign and act as President if something were to occur to both the President and Vice-President. He was also a vice-chief of the army and served in Vietnam and later Supreme NATO Commander of Europe. Alexander Haig was 85 when passed away today.
