Iceland’s Revenge…Eyjafjallajökull…Say What?

As Iceland volcano ash lingers over Europe, stranded travelers’ patience wanes…

I can’t even come close to trying to pronounce it and spelling it aint easy either, but the Icelandic volcano that is erupting millions of tons of ash and rock has single handily closed air travel across 1/3rd of Europe. Airlines are shuffling trying to use different routes while travellers from both sides of the Atlantic have been stuck for four days now.

President Obama,”I am 100% committed to the mission of NASA and its future.”

Details: Obama Remarks at NASA on April 15, 2010…

The President outlined his goals for NASA as the shuttle program comes to an end. The President will increase NASA’s budget by $6 billion over the next 5 years as it transitions to maintaining the International Space Station with Russia’s help and boosting more private and commercial involvement for low earth orbit missions. The president will move forward with the development of rockets and a vehicle that can take manned space flights to asteroids and to Mars. Instead of returning to the Moon the President sees more opportunity in focusing on deeper space exploration.

SPACE: Where No Man Has Gone Before…

Today President Obama unveils the future of America’s space program at Cape Canaveral, FL. The economy has not only taken a toll on the American people but has directly affected NASA’s budget and how to fund such programs as Constellation the manned missions to the Moon and Mars. The President under budgetary pressures due to the economy and the new healthcare reforms to cover over 30 million uninsured Americans will have to tone down exuberant costly missions such as manned flights and the first man to land on Mars.

Although an extensive and ambitious space program like Constellation maybe put on hold I’d like to see a Gemini like program a transition space mission which builds a vehicle that can travel past the Moon and perhaps just an orbital mission to Mars and back.  We should concentrate on space travel and not just landing on Mars. I’d rather see more robotic explorers to land on Mars and other planets and more emphasis on testing long duration manned space travel and the vehicle to take us further than ever before.
